Frequently Asked Questions
WHERE AND WHEN IS THIS HAPPENING AND
HOW SOON CAN I GET THERE?
Nice enthusiasm! Rehearsals start August 13th 2019 from 7-8:30PM at The UU Meeting House of
Pittsfield which is located at 112 Easy Street.
WHO CAN JOIN THE MEETING HOUSE SINGERS?
Anyone who is respectful and wants to sing with other people in a welcoming community is free to join. No auditions or prior experience is necessary. There may be auditions for solos though, at the discretion of the musical director. No divas allowed. With the possible exception of Mariah Carey.
CAN KIDS PARTICIPATE?
Kids age 10 and up are welcome to sing with us if they are accompanied by an adult who is also participating.
IS THERE AN ATTENDANCE POLICY?
Short answer: Nope. Longer answer: Nooooooope. We’d like to sound realllllly good and rehearse all the time, but we’re all busy people and life happens. Drop in when you can.
HOW DO WE LEARN OUR SONGS?
By singing them and listening to them. Together. Repeatedly. We'll mostly sing simple 2-part harmonies, and choral sheet music will be available. But if you need to learn by ear, and don't read music, that's no problem either. We can learn together through a mix of formal and informal methods.
ARE THERE ANY DUES OR COSTS IF I PARTICIPATE?
ARE THERE PUBLIC PERFORMANCES?
Our main focal point is the fun and ritual of our weekly Rehearsals, but we also sing once a month as part of "All Together Now", an interfaith community worship service offered by the UU Meeting House. Don't want to sing in public ever? Not a church person? No big deal. It's optional!
WHO CHOOSES THE SONGS?
Our founding musical director Jess Tardy does that. She does take requests once in a blue moon, but she will never ever do that song you love from Rent. Never.
WHO PUT THE BOMP IN THE BOMP SHOO BOMP SHOO BOMP?
We don't know, but we have a few theories and we'd like to shake their hand.
YOU MEET AT A CHURCH, AND SING AT A CHURCH ONCE A MONTH, DOES THAT MEAN YOU ARE A CHURCH CHOIR?
Nope. We are a secular choir singing feel-good pop tunes offered as a way to connect friends and neighbors in the spirit of music and community. We just happen to meet in a church and sing in their beautiful chapel. We won't be singing religious music, unless you worship Dolly Parton. If you worship Dolly, we'd love to meet you because we have a few questions.
WHAT MUSIC DO WE SING?
We sing popular songs from the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. Everything from "Lean on Me" to songs from "The Greatest Showman". We sing songs that uplift and unite people, span generations, and are easy for anyone to sing along to if the spirit moves them.
We ask that you try to contribute a $3 to $5 donation for every time you drop in and sing with us, and encourage you to come even if you are flat broke. Don't let money stop you. We need you.
